In our latest blog series, we’re opening the doors to Alt Labs HQ and getting to know some of the talented souls that make up the team. This week we’re talking to our Marketing Manager, Sam!

A bit of backgound
Eurovision superfan Sam, joined the team in May bringing with her over 15 years of marketing experience!
At Alt Labs, Sam is responsible for helping deliver all marketing campaigns, PR and much more. Find out more about her role and how she got on with our five quick questions.
Q1 – What does your role involve?
My role involves all aspects of communication for Alt Labs, Flok and our clients. This can make for a really varied work day; whether it’s creating a social strategy, writing a press release, prepping for an event or mapping out a series of blogs. I love the variety!
Q2 – What is the most important skill you need for your role?
I think it’s really important to remember that everything comes back to messaging. I was lucky enough to start my career as social media was in its infancy, and since then the number of potential platforms companies have to interact with their audiences has grown exponentially – not to mention the materials produced for these platforms, such as podcasts, videos, infographics and more. While there will always be new platforms to explore, everything starts with getting the messaging right.
Q3 – What is the most rewarding part of your role?
For me marketing is the perfect combination of analytics and creativity, with one always informing the other. I love being in a role that engages both sides of my brain and where there’s always something new to learn or try, it is impossible to be bored!
Q4 – What has been the biggest change in your sector in the past 12 months?
Over the past year companies have become far more aware of living up to their brand values, in order to appeal to their target markets. Those that don’t practice what they preach, or pay only obvious lip service, will find it increasingly difficult to connect with their audiences.
On the flip side, it’s a great opportunity for SMEs, who often have more defined values from the start, and have the flexibility to make impactful changes in much shorter timeframes.
Q5: What is your top productivity hack?
Lists! I often find that spending 10 minutes away from the screen with a pen and paper, writing things down can be incredibly calming and help me to focus on my priorities. There are tons of great note apps online but something about using a pen and paper just works better for me…. There’s something about the process that is literally ‘old school’, even down to making the first page of a notepad neater than the others!
